GrindBox is a free, browser-based gamified study timer designed for students and deep workers. It runs at grindbox.app with no installation required and combines three study modes — Pomodoro Protocol, Milestone Flow, and Deep Flow — with a progression system that unlocks animated animal companions, streak titles, and interface skins as you accumulate study time. It is not a task manager or a to-do list. It is a dedicated session environment built for the hours you are actually studying.
Completely free. All three study modes, all 20 animal companions, all 16 streak titles, all 10 interface skins, and full cloud sync are available at no cost. There are no premium tiers, no subscription, and no ads. GrindBox generates no advertising revenue — if you want to support the project, there is a voluntary support link in the app.
Pomodoro Protocol runs fixed-length focus intervals with structured breaks. You choose your interval length and break duration, and GrindBox tracks your completed cycles. Milestone Flow divides your reading into page blocks — you set a start page, end page, and block size, and GrindBox creates a checklist that tracks your pace and estimated time remaining. Deep Flow is an open-ended stopwatch for long, uninterrupted sessions where time-boxing would be counterproductive.
Deep Flow is an unrestricted study stopwatch. There are no intervals, no break reminders, and no imposed structure. It is built for the kind of studying where entering a timed mode would fragment your concentration. During Deep Flow, animal companions appear at milestone intervals — starting at 30 minutes and extending beyond 10 hours — and the session logs automatically to your permanent history. Research consistently shows that ultradian focus cycles run 90 to 120 minutes; Deep Flow is designed to let you complete that cycle without interruption.
GrindBox has 20 animated animal companions that unlock as you hit time milestones during Deep Flow sessions. At 30 minutes, Madam Butterfly appears. At 67 minutes, HeiHei the rooster. Each companion is a Lottie animation that walks, flies, or swims across your screen with a unique sound. Once unlocked, a companion lives permanently in your Study Identity panel. You can equip any unlocked companion — they will sit with you during break periods, replacing the coffee cup icon in the break timer.
GrindBox tracks how many consecutive days you study and awards permanent titles based on your longest streak ever reached. There are 16 titles. At 3 days you earn NPC, and at 11 days, you will know when you will earn it. Titles are permanent — they do not reset if your streak breaks. Your equipped title appears in your Study Identity panel and is part of your persistent profile. The streak system is designed to reward long-term consistency, not perfection.
GrindBox has 10 interface skins. Luminary, Manuscript, and Protocol unlock immediately with no requirement. The remaining seven — Verdant, Mocha, Nocturne, Neon Dusk, Rosewood, Aurora, and Obsidian — unlock automatically at lifetime study hour thresholds. Verdant at 8 hours. Mocha at 20. Obsidian at 200. You do not need to do anything except study. Once unlocked, a skin changes the color palette, typography, border radius, and visual character of the entire interface.
Yes, with a free account. Signing in with Google or email syncs your complete progression state — session history, streak data, unlocked companions, titles, skins, and equipped items — to Firebase Firestore. Your data appears on any device you sign into. Without an account, all data is stored in your browser's local storage and stays on that device. If you clear your browser data, local progress is lost. Cloud sync is the recommended approach for anyone studying across multiple devices.
Yes. GrindBox is a Progressive Web App that works in any modern mobile browser. Visit grindbox.app on your phone or tablet to use all features including session tracking, companion animations, streak system, and cloud sync. You can add GrindBox to your home screen from your browser's share menu for a full-screen, app-like experience. On iOS and Android, the experience is identical to desktop.
GrindBox uses no advertising scripts, no behavioral tracking, and no third-party analytics. Your session data — stored in Firebase under your authenticated account — contains only your study records, progression state, and equipped items. Forest kills your virtual tree if you leave the app. GrindBox does not penalize you — it rewards depth. Forest's mechanic is avoidance-based. GrindBox's mechanic is accumulation-based. Beyond that structural difference: GrindBox offers three distinct study modes to Forest's one, a permanent session archive with 365-day heatmap visualization, 20 animated companions that respond to your actual study duration, and a streak title system with 16 progression levels. GrindBox is specifically designed for long academic sessions — reading, revision, research — not for general phone avoidance.
GrindBox was built by Taimoor Wajid, an independent developer who started the project as a personal study tool and expanded it into a full gamified productivity platform. Yes. Everything works without an account — all three study modes, companion unlocks, streak tracking, and session history are stored in your browser locally. Signing in adds cloud sync and cross-device access. If you use GrindBox on a single device and do not clear your browser data, you will never need an account. We recommend signing in if you study on multiple devices or want a permanent backup of your history.
Milestone Flow is GrindBox's page-based reading mode. You enter a start page, end page, and pages per block. GrindBox generates a checklist of reading blocks and tracks your completion rate, pages remaining, estimated time to finish based on your current pace, and wasted time beyond your break limit. It is designed for textbook chapters, research papers, academic articles, and any reading task where page count is a more meaningful progress metric than elapsed time.
